Edmund Wormald

Studio(s): Leeds
Great George Street; Leeds
English.
Edmund Wormald (born 1 October 1829 in Leeds) was a prominent Victorian photographer specialising in portraits, architectural photography and local views. In July 1856, he established a photographic studio at 13 Great George Street, Leeds, in partnership with William Child, trading as the Gallery of Art. After their partnership ended in 1859, Wormald continued independently.

Wormald advertised his ability to photograph buildings, sculpture and country estates, as well as portraits, and produced important early views of Leeds. His photographs of Leeds Town Hall were presented to Queen Victoria at its opening in 1858. He subsequently photographed numerous local buildings and streets, documenting aspects of the city that were soon to disappear. His studio later operated at 26, and subsequently 46, Great George Street.

His brother Joseph Wormald also became a photographer, and the brothers eventually traded as Wormald Brothers. Their partnership was dissolved in February 1890. Edmund's wife, Elizabeth, and son Charles Edmund died that year; Edmund's subsequent life remains uncertain. His surviving photographs are an important record of nineteenth-century Leeds and its architectural development.
